Aurora Over the Flatirons

Catching a glimpse of the aurora this far south in Colorado is a rare gift—and one I almost missed. I was exhausted, life had been heavy, and honestly, my bed sounded like the better option. But after some mental gymnastics, I grabbed my gear, headed for my favorite mountains, and reminded myself: opportunities like this don’t come often.

It was my first time photographing the stars with a new camera, and I wasn’t sure if I’d capture anything worth keeping.

My husband has a saying—“swim in the waterfall.” The idea is simple: if life hands you a rare chance, take it. Yes, the water might be cold, you’ll get wet, and you may regret it for a moment—but the memory will stay with you forever.

So, I stayed. I waited more than an hour for the moon to set. And when the colors finally came alive in my viewfinder, I felt giddy—grateful that I hadn’t given in to exhaustion. I went home with images I was proud of, a tired body, and a full heart. In the end, I swam in the waterfall.
