Pawnee Pass Paintbrushes
There are moments in nature that completely take my breath away — when I feel both overwhelmed and giddy by the beauty in front of me. This was one of those moments.
On my first solo backpacking trip, as I descended Pawnee Pass in Colorado’s Indian Peaks Wilderness, I turned a corner and found myself staring at an endless field of pink Indian Paintbrush — my favorite wildflower. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself. Which way should I shoot? Do I capture the whole field? Focus on just one bloom?
I couldn’t decide, so I stayed there for nearly half an hour, photographing the scene with my 45-pound pack still on my back.
That field — and the feeling of awe it stirred — has stayed with me ever since. It woke something in me that had been quiet for a long time: pure joy. I still think back to that moment whenever I need a reminder to seek out what makes life magical. Some days it’s easier than others, but that field reminds me that joy is always out there, waiting to be found.
